Darts and DWAGS

Filed under: Darts Articles — auctiondesigns @ 4:29 pm

Darts isn’t exactly known for its sexy image. The humble, pub sport is more associated with beer bellies and middle-aged blokes. But The Sun newspaper has ran a feature on the rise of the DWAGS. The feature claims that darts has become something of a sexy sport, and that the DWAGS have had to become used to ‘other women trying to hit the bullseye with their men’.

The Drama of Darts

But darts is a game that still has its feet firmly on the ground. Unlike the footballers’ wives who have become fashion icons, snapped in the pages of gossip magazines and scrutinized by fashion editors on everything from their wardrobes to their weight, the DWAGS are undoubtedly more down to earth. Unlike WAGS who spend their waking hours shopping and perfecting their looks, the DWAGS tend to be working mothers – but as The Sun reveals, the DWAGS certainly experience their fair share of dramas, as much as the famed footballers’ wives.

Darts’ Champion Breaks Down

Darts, like all sports, has its fair share of controversy. And the profile of DWAG Jenny Fordham in the tabloid reveals darts can be enormously dramatic. Darts is now very much a high level sport, played at a professional level with a lot of money at stake. But it’s roots are very much in the working class pub. And many of the big names in darts have experienced problems with alcohol. Jenny’s husband, Andy ‘The Viking’ Fordham was one of the greatest darts’ champs. But he collapsed at the 2008 BDO World Professional Darts Championship tournament. Andy had a minor stroke in his mid-forties. At the time he was 27 stone, and had to have 18 litres of fluid drained from his lungs. The booze was to blame – as well as drinking while playing darts, the Fordham’s ran a pub. Jenny told The Sun: “The moment he got up in the morning he would open a beer and wouldn’t stop drinking until the middle of the night. Darts and drinking go together. It is a working man’s sport, which started in the pubs, so alcohol has always been associated with it.”

Women go Crazy for Darts!

Now Fordham is considering entering professional darts again, after shedding ten stone and giving up the booze for good. It was the beer belly and the beard that gave him the nickname ‘the Viking’. And DWAG Jenny said even when he was big, the women ‘went crazy’ for the darts champion. “He regularly gets letters from women who declare their love and ask him to marry them,” she said.
